New World Map | Weekly Finds Vol. 18
The most accurate flat map of earth yet
Dear reader,
The world map devised by Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator in 1569 became the norm and was even the basis of Google Maps until as recently as 2018.
Though he gave sailors the tools to navigate ocean voyages, he also distorted the size of countries nearest the poles—North America appears abnormally large, for example.
In 2019, Astrophysicist J. Richard Gott and his colleagues set out to fix the inaccuracies and came up with a double-sided map. It improves geographical parity between continents, finally representing the southern hemisphere as fairly as possible on paper.

✏ Quote
“Do not suppress desire, because then you would become lifeless. Understand it. Don’t seek to fulfill desire so much as to understand desire, your desire will then be transformed into what I call a preference.”
— Anthony De Mello, Awareness: The Perils and Opportunities of Reality
📕 Poem
You don’t want to hear the story
of my life, and anyway
I don’t want to tell it, I want to listen
to the enormous waterfalls of the sun.
And anyway it’s the same old story–
a few people just trying,
one way or another,
to survive.
Mostly, I want to be kind.
And nobody, of course, is kind,
or mean,
for a simple reason.
And nobody gets out of it, having to
swim through the fires to stay in
this world.
